Operating Engineers File OSHA Complaint Against Jacked Co. For Safety Violations

While picketing Jacked Co. outside the Soho House Portland construction site on Monday, Dec. 11, IUOE Local 701 witnessed Jacked Co. commit significant safety violations, prompting the union to file a complaint with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

Jacked Co. workers failed to take the proper safety steps while preparing a crane for operation. IUOE 701 watched at least one worker stand on top of the crane and the crane boom without being tied off. OSHA requires all workers in the construction industry to be tied off when working more than six feet off the ground.

These violations create an unsafe and hazardous work environment and teach bad practices for all other workers on the site. Jacked Co.’s owner has a history of unsafe work practices. At IUOE 701, we take safety incredibly seriously and believe all worksites should be safe and comfortable environments for workers.

Upon witnessing these violations, IUOE 701 filed a report with OSHA, in hopes that the state will investigate these violations and compel Jacked Co. to implement stronger safety measures and training.

Jacked Co. did not continue to operate on the Soho House site after Monday, but IUOE 701 will continue to exercise its First Amendment rights to notify the public that the company does not pay area standard wages and benefits.

IUOE 701 represents over 3,900 heavy equipment operators, heavy duty repairers, technical engineers, and stationary engineers throughout Oregon and Southwest Washington.
